Coventry University’s Ladies Gaelic Football Club was founded four years ago by a group of Irish girls who had recently moved to the area to study at the university. The club was established in order to help those living away from home stay connected to their roots, meet other Irish people, introduce newcomers to the game and most importantly, have the craic whilst creating friendships that would last a lifetime. Any sporting success in competition that came on top of that would be a bonus, but, almost four years later, we are delighted with the progress and status the club has achieved. In our first year of existence, we were entered into Division 2 and by the end of that year, were crowned winners of both the League & British University Championships. In our following years, we made in to the semi-final stage of both Division 1 & 2 respectively, were crowned Division 2 British Champions once again as well as achieving more league success. Sadly, due to covid-19 our championship this year was cancelled but we had many successes through the year as we had new players from all over the world and Ireland. Players gained skills and had a craic time while doing it.
We have maintained a great number of members to date (of all abilities and nationalities), indicating the popularity and interest this sport generates away from home.
Over the last few years, we have achieved many success at Coventry University’s annual Sports Ball, including ‘Best Small Club’ and ‘Team of the Year’. Both of these awards are a testament to our hard-working and dedicated committee, management and club members over the years.
As well as competing in sport, we also enjoy the social aspect too and organise numerous fundraising and group events throughout the year.
We are confident and know there is another British Championship within this club and are excited to see what the future holds! So why not get in contact with us and be a part of the history we make?
We train to teach new Gaelic football skills and to keep our skills and fitness up and have a bit of craic while doing so. We compete in the British University League and Championships. We train on Fridays at19:30-20:30 at Coventry Sphinx sports social club CV3 1WA.
