Explore the needs of Autistic and neurodivergent mothers and parents during the perinatal period.

An interactive workshop designed to provide midwives, student midwives, healthcare professionals, and birthworkers with an understanding of the specific needs of Autistic mothers and gestational parents during the perinatal period, ultimately improving their experiences through a toolkit of tailored, empathetic care strategies. 

Aims

  • Attendees will develop an appreciation of potential barriers and inaccessibility to maternity care for Autistic people and the impact this has on health and wellbeing.
  • To provide attendees with the opportunity to reflect on how their setting can improve the service for Autistic people – in policy and in practice

Learning Objective

  • Explore Autism from a medical and social perspective.
  • Consider the impact of diagnosis, misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis for girls and women.
  • Gain an improved understanding of Autistic women’s experiences of the perinatal period including birth and breastfeeding.
  • To examine Autism, poor mental health and co-occurring health conditions in relation to perinatal care practice.
  • To take away key ideas to develop good practice going forward.
  • To consider the design of inclusive, accessible healthcare environments to develop practice
  • To explore currently available resources to support midwifery practice.
