What is Social Sport?

Our social sport programmes offers weekly leagues for you to represent your college or school and play socially with groups of friends. Try something new or just come along and play sports for fun. We have a range of different sports to try, making it easy to fit in around your studies.

There will be opportunities to play individual and team sports to gain points for your college or school. There will also be drop-in sessions outside of the league where you can just turn and play for fun, so no need to commit to coming weekly.

Benefits of Social Sport?

  • The leagues are a great way to stay active and take a break from your academic studies.
  • You can take part in as many sessions (and sports) as you can fit into your schedule.
  • All sessions will run at the sports centre on campus.
  • Leagues run in semester 1 and again in semester 2, one-day events will take place throughout the year.
  • It’s a great way to try something new.

Leagues

Badminton Mixed

Badminton is a recreational game played in singles (two opposing players) and doubles (two opposing pairs). The aim of the game is to win points by hitting a shuttlecock across the net and into your opponent's court forcing your opponent to make an error and be unable to return the shuttlecock back. The lightness of the racket and the shape of the shuttlecock mean that it is a very fast game requiring good reactions and speed around the court.

Football Mixed

Five-a-side Football is version of mini-football. It is an informal, small, sided game with four outfield players and a goalkeeper. The object of the game is to score by getting the ball into the opposing goal. The penalty area is semi-circular and only the goalkeeper can touch the ball within it. There are no offside rules, headers are allowed, and yellow and red cards work similarly to traditional 11-a-side football.
