In this student guide, we provide essential tips and advice to help you stay safe and empowered while enjoying your time in London.

1. Get Familiar with the City

Take time to explore and familiarize yourself with the different neighborhoods in London. Research areas around your university and accommodation to understand their safety reputations. Seek advice from fellow students and university resources about safe places to visit and how to get around.

2. Use Reliable Transportation

London offers a well-connected public transport system. When using buses or the Underground, opt for well-lit and busy routes, especially at night. Keep your Oyster card or contactless payment ready to avoid delays and be aware of your surroundings when waiting at stations.

3. Stay Connected

Keep your phone charged and share your schedule with friends or family, so they know your whereabouts. Make sure you have emergency contact numbers saved in case of any urgent situations. Check out some recommended safety phone apps below:

  • 'CitizenAID' (FREE on Android | Apple) gives advice on immediate actions in case of an incident.
  • 'what3words' (FREE on Android Apple) will give you an exact location based on 3 words that you can provide to the Emergency Services in case of emergency.
  • 'SafeZone' (FREE Android | Apple) enables you to call for help when you need it most, giving you fast access to university response teams. Log in with your Uni details!

4. Be Cautious with Valuables

Pickpocketing can happen, especially in crowded tourist areas or on public transport. Keep your belongings secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. Use a cross-body bag or backpack with secure zippers to prevent theft.

5. Know Your Limits with Alcohol

If you decide to socialise in bars or pubs, be mindful of your alcohol consumption. Stay in control and avoid leaving your drink unattended. Drinking responsibly ensures you can make informed decisions and stay safe during social outings. Some bars will offer an anti-spiking drink stopper for your beverage to reduce risk of drink tampering - make sure you ask!

6. Trust Your Instincts

Your instincts are valuable, so trust them. If a situation feels uncomfortable or unsafe, remove yourself from it and seek assistance if needed. Your well-being is a priority, and it's okay to prioritise your safety.

7. Seek Support from University Services

Find more info on Coventry University safety guidance here and on the Student Portal. You can also contact our Student Advice team for free, independant and confidential support. Knowing where to find help can be reassuring and empowering.

8. Build a Supportive Network

Connect with other students and join activities and events that interest you. Building a supportive network of friends can provide a sense of security and create a community where you feel comfortable and empowered. You can find our London SU Events here and more info on joining or running a Society here.

9. Raise Awareness about Safety

Share safety tips and information with your friends and fellow students! Raising awareness about women's safety issues is essential in promoting a safer environment for everyone.

10. Report Incidents

If you experience any form of harassment or feel unsafe, don't hesitate to report it to the appropriate authorities or university support services. Reporting incidents helps raise awareness and contributes to improving safety measures. In an emergency, contact the police, ambulance, or fire department on 999 or 112. These numbers are free to call – only use them in a real emergency.

Remember, your safety is a collective effort, and there is no substitute for being prepared and informed. By staying aware, connected, and proactive, you can enjoy your time as a student in London while feeling confident and secure.
