Attendance - why it matters!

Attending your classes is important! Attending means you get more out of your course and is more likely to support your academic success. Attendance issues can also lead to withdrawal from the university, so it's important to understand the importance of attending and the consequences of not.

Why is attendance important?

Attendance is important because missing classes can seriously affect your academic success. Students who don’t attend regularly are more likely to fail modules, which can delay or prevent you from earning your degree. Every stage of your course is important. The knowledge you gain in each stage builds the foundation for later stages. Additionally, you are wasting your money on tuition fees if you are not taking advantage of attending your classes.

What happens if I have poor attendance?

The university regularly monitors the attendance of all students, and there are procedures in place for both Home and International students to withdraw them from the university if there is persistent absence from timetabled sessions.

For International students on a student visa, a requirement of your visa and to meet your sponsorship obligations to the University, you must attend timetabled sessions. Non-attendance could lead to the university withdrawing you and your student visa being revoked, meaning you need to leave the UK.

It's important that you are tapping into all timetabled sessions and ensure your attendance is recorded.

Who do I contact regarding attendance?

If you are struggling to attend classes, speak to your Course Tutor or Course Director.

Coventry University offers a range of support services, from study support to wellbeing services, that may be able to help. If you are struggling with a long-term illness affecting your ability to attend, you can access support from the Student Wellbeing Service. Remember, this is why it's important to register with a GP should you ever need medical evidence for a university process. You can find more support services on our support hub

How can the Students' Union Advice Service help with attendance issues?

Your Students' Union Advice Service can support with procedural issues around your university attendance. If you believe your attendance record is wrong, if you aren't able to attend and aren't sure what to do, if you are invited to an attendance meeting or if you're withdrawn due to low attendance, Your Advice Service is here to help.

You can contact the Advice Service by completing the online enquiry form
