🎨Art Society Wins Excellence Award: A Year of Creativity, Confidence & Community

This year, the Art Society set out to do something bold—not just to run events or host workshops, but to create a real space for connection, creativity, and confidence. And what a year it’s been.

Winning the Excellence Award feels incredibly special, especially because everything we did was rooted in a simple but powerful idea: Art is for everyone.

Whether you were studying engineering, business, or fine art—or whether you hadn’t picked up a paintbrush since primary school—this was a space where you could come exactly as you are. No experience needed, no pressure to perform. Just a warm, welcoming place to express yourself, try new things, and maybe even discover something new about yourself along the way.

💬 "We weren’t just a committee—we were part of the community."

What made this year different wasn’t just what we did, but how we did it.

From the very start, the committee made an intentional effort to plan early and communicate clearly. We really valued each other’s ideas and made space for open conversations—both within the team and with our members. Every bit of feedback helped shape the society into what it became.

We shared responsibilities, lifted each other up, and stayed closely connected with our members. One thing that really stood out was how involved the committee stayed in day-to-day activities—we weren’t running things for members; we were right there with them. That closeness created a strong sense of community.

🌟 Trying New Things, Every Single Week

One of the things we’re most proud of is how consistently we offered new, exciting things to try. Whether it was a new technique, a different style of art, or a collaborative session, there was always something fresh each week.

But more than that, our members knew they’d be welcomed into a space where they could take a break from the chaos of university life. A little moment just for themselves—to explore, unwind, and feel seen. That’s why people kept coming back. The friendships and the personal connections became just as important as the art itself.

🧠 What We Learned—and What We’d Share

If we could pass on one message to other societies, it would be this: you don’t have to do it all alone.

We learned the value of trust, of delegating, and of inviting members into the process. You’d be surprised how many students are excited to help when you give them the chance. We also found that clear and honest communication—especially with your members—builds trust and reduces stress for everyone.

We’d recommend staying in regular contact with your SU coordinator and staff. They’re a great source of support, especially when it comes to planning, problem-solving, or just having a sounding board.

And most of all—don’t be afraid to try something new. That applies to you as a leader, and to your members. Stepping outside of your comfort zone might just be the start of something great.

🥹 Final Thoughts from the Committee

Looking back, this society has been so much more than just extracurricular. It’s helped us grow in ways we never expected. Personally, I’ve learned about event planning, organisation, leadership—but more importantly, about the kind of community I want to help build.

“This year helped me grow in confidence, meet new people, and find something meaningful outside my degree. It’s been one of the best parts of my university experience.”

Congratulations to everyone involved in the Art Society—you’ve built something truly beautiful, and this recognition is so well deserved.
