Our friends over at West Midlands police have recently informed us about an increase in robbery cases across Coventry. Read on for a reminder of what you can do to help protect yourself and your belongings so you can continue to enjoy being out and about in your city this summer.
The act of robbery occurs when someone takes something from you or your property without your consent. You may also hear it referred to as theft, stealing, burglary or pick-pocketing. Sometimes the thief may use force or intimidation to get what they want; sometimes they may be so quiet and sneaky about it that you don’t even notice that your phone, money, or keys are missing until later. Your campus Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) has been in touch to let us know of a recent rise in robbery cases across the city of Coventry. Whilst the likelihood of you being a victim of robbery is still low, it is a good idea to remind yourself of these top three tips so you can enjoy a worry free time whilst out and about in your favourite city. These tips don’t just apply to Coventry - use them wherever you are to make sure you have a safe and happy time, today and every day.
- Stay sharp. When you are moving through a public place it is always good to stay aware of your surroundings. Try not to get too distracted on your phone - just one minute of you not paying attention could be the perfect opportunity for a thief. If you are getting money out of a cash point make sure to cover the keypad with your hand whilst putting your card pin in. Also, make sure not to take unnecessary risks. No matter the time of day, it's always best to stick to the most well-lit and busiest public routes that you can.
- Lock it down. When you’re out and about in busy areas, try not to draw attention to any valuables that you may be carrying. Examples include jewellery, luggage, shopping bags, mobile phones, and tablets. Keep them close to you or out of sight wherever possible, especially when waiting for public transport in crowded spaces.
- Back up the bag. Always have a plan for the most valuable things that you simply can’t do without – like your mobile phone or tablet. Consider turning on tracking features for all your gadgets. You can also make a note of your phone's unique IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number, which you can find by keying in *#06#* to your phone call app to display it on your screen. These things will help the police when it comes to trying to find any gadget that has been taken from you. You should also consider taking out contents insurance on your most valuable or expensive belongings. This means you will be completely covered with replacements and support if the unthinkable happens and those all important electronics are taken from you.
