Sunflower lanyards are a tool allowing individuals to voluntarily share that they have a hidden disability, and therefore might need extra help. Your SU has a limited number of lanyards available for free for students with hidden disabilities.
Some disabilities, conditions, or chronic illnesses are not visible or obvious. This can make it hard to understand or believe that someone who does have an 'invisible' condition genuinely needs support. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, launched in 2016, is used in countries across the world to enable disabled people to voluntarily share that they have a hidden disability with others. The symbol is a way of showing that you might need extra help, understanding, support, or time. The sunlfflower is also a symbol of inclusivity, acceptance, and understanding.
If you have an invisible disability, it's completely up to you whether you want to disclose that with others. However, if you feel it would be useful to you, Your Studetns' Union now has a supply of Hidden Disability Sunflower lanyards available for free to students with a hidden disability.
If you would like a lanyard, please come to the Students' Union Office on the ground floor, attend an Ideas Drop-In, or you can speak to a Welfare and Disabilities Advisor who can refer you for a lanyard. You can also email us at scarborough.su@coventry.ac.uk for more information.
