About the event

A Taste of Diversity: Celebrating Afro-Caribbean Culture

Thursday 29 January | 12:00 – 1:30pm | CU Scarborough - G14

Join us for an interactive and thought-provoking workshop celebrating Afro-Caribbean culture through food, storytelling, and open conversation. A Taste of Diversity is a community-led initiative by Maya’s Club, Big Maya’s Jerk, and North Yorkshire Police, created to foster understanding, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate cultural diversity.

Why attend?

North Yorkshire is one of the least diverse regions in England, and many people have had limited exposure to Afro-Caribbean culture. In today’s social and political climate, conversations around race, identity, and hate crime are more important than ever. This workshop creates a safe, welcoming space to learn, connect, and reflect.

Founded by Maya Mihoc, who brings lived experience of navigating multicultural identity in predominantly white spaces, A Taste of Diversity uses culture, food, and dialogue to encourage meaningful understanding and inclusion.

What to expect:

🍽️ Interactive Afro-Caribbean Cooking Session
Led by Maya Mihoc (Founder of Maya’s Club & Big Maya’s Jerk), this hands-on session explores Afro-Caribbean spices, dishes, and food traditions. Food becomes a powerful tool for connection, learning, and shared experience.

🛑 Hate Crime Awareness & Prevention
Delivered by North Yorkshire Police, this session covers what constitutes a hate crime, its real-life impact, and practical steps students can take to report and prevent it.

📚 Access to Learning & Resources
In partnership with the National Literacy Trust, participants receive books and learning materials to continue exploring diversity beyond the workshop and support long-term cultural education.

Who is it for?

University students of all backgrounds who are curious, open-minded, and interested in culture, social justice, and community connection.

🎫 Tickets are FREE but limited — booking is essential.
Come for the food, stay for the conversation, and leave with a deeper understanding of diversity.
