Japanese Society

The event is based on the Japanese tradition of Setsubun, where people invite good luck and chase away bad luck. We will do face arranging puzzles (Fukuwarai), throwing beans to chase away bad luck, learn about the tradition and do some origami.

About the event

Join us for a celebration of Setsubun, a Japanese tradition held on the 1st of February to welcome good luck and drive away bad luck for the year ahead.

We’ll be running a range of fun activities, including:

  • Fukuwarai (a face‑arranging puzzle game)

  • A light‑hearted bean‑throwing activity to symbolically chase away bad luck

  • A short animation introducing the Setsubun tradition

  • A mini origami session

You’re also welcome to simply drop in, chat, enjoy some snacks, and play games. We may even explore a few simple Japanese words connected to Setsubun.

If you have any allergies, please let us know in advance, as soybeans will be used during the bean‑throwing activity.

More details will be shared on our Instagram as the event approaches.
