January Community Executive Updates:

This month we had 3 new event/ activity submissions for student-led community initaitves. 2 of these have now been approved and the planning stage has started. These first event is a Studen-led talk for the Disabled community on motivation. The second will be a a re-occuring crafting style event that will be led by Nutan, the lead of our Global Majority students community.

Community Officer Updates:

I have recently launched the Make a Change: Campaign Competition for students who submit a campaign request between Monday 20 January 2025 and 5pm on Wednesday 19 February 2025. I have written an article on What Makes a Good Campaign. I also organised a Train the Trainer session which was facilitated by the Talent team to guide trainers on how to best use the team to improve employability for students. The student leaders now have the responsibility of training colleagues on the lessons learnt from the session hence, I am working on a schedule for the various leaders to deliver training to the communities. I am also looking forward to having a workshop session with Amnesty International in the month of february and an Entrepreneurship workshop which will be facilitated by organisers of the Coventry University Launch programme.

Lastly,  I am looking forward to support with the LGBTQIA+ history month which is led by Alex, the Community Engagement Lead for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Community Engagement Lead Updates:

Sophie Horton - Women's Community Engagement Lead:

Welcome new and returning students to this new semester, from the Women’s Student Community!!

It was amazing to meet and talk to so many of you at the recent events fairs, and I hope you all have had an amazing few weeks back. We are all busy at work organising a range of exciting events for you all, as well as campaigns and responding to the amazing feedback you’ve given us. Very soon will be International Women’s Day and we’re so excited to announce the events and celebrations we will be hosting! Keep an eye out here and on the SU website and we’ll be back in touch very soon!!

Alex Powell - LGBTQIA+ Community Engagement Lead:

Welcome back everyone, hope the first few weeks of uni are going well. I have a busy semester planned.

February is LGBTQIA+ History Month so there is lots happening. There will be some crafting, SU takeovers and Queer Words events. All of the events are on the SU website and the LGBTQIA+ community page and the LGBTQIA+ History Month page.

The Gender Expression Fund is still open this semester so please apply to it if you are trans+ and looking to purchase any gender affirming items.

We are also working on some Pheonix+ training on Being Trans+ and How to Support Trans+ Students. This training is still being developed so please keep an eye out for any updates about this.

Layna Forbes - Disabled Community Engagement Lead:

Here is an update on my current projects which links in with my campaign for building a neuro-inclusive campus:

  • Sensory Rooms: I have secured £400 in funding from the SU and made significant progress in identifying a potential location. Approval is currently pending before the next steps can be taken.

  • Reasonable Adjustments Policies: The university is progressing with its review of policies related to reasonable adjustments, which is encouraging.

  • Training for Staff and Students: This semester, I am focusing on delivering training. A detailed plan of topics has been developed, and I am hopeful that this training will be delivered before the semester ends.
