Community officer Updates:

I am currently planning a trip to the UK Parliament and two parties Young, Wild & Three - Communities Party and Young, Wild & Three - Communities Party where students from the different communities can meet, unwind and socialise. The Model UN event will be moved to 27th January and 4th February 2025 to enable students prepare adequately for their assessments (exams and coursework). I have been working to support the initiatives and activities for Disability History Month. Two initiatives: a campaign and debate competition are set to launch in January 2025, amongst other activities. I am eagerly looking forward to next year.

Wishing everyone success in their assessments and Compliments of the season. See you all next year!

Community Engagement Lead Updates:

Layna Forbes - Disabled Student Community Lead:

Disability History Month (DHM):
I’ve been organizing events and initiatives to celebrate and inform students about disability history. This includes a crafting event to bring students together and raise awareness, setting up awareness stalls at Coventry University and CU Coventry with resources and activities, and hosting a guest speaker panel to share personal insights and foster understanding of disability.

Building a Neuro-Inclusive Campus Campaign:
My campaign to build a neuro-inclusive campus has made exciting progress. I’ve been working on developing sensory/quiet spaces, with plans to launch the first room in Semester 2. I’m also creating training for staff and neurotypical students to help improve understanding of neurodiversity, along with workshops tailored for neurodivergent students focused on support strategies. I recently released a “How to Prevent Burnout as a University Student” leaflet and am planning additional resources, like leaflets, articles, and posters, specifically for disabled and neurodivergent students.

General Updates:

  • I’ve been in discussions with Odudu about setting up study group sessions for Semester 2.
  • Together with Odudu and Promise, we are planning to set up group chats for each community to enhance engagement and create a stronger sense of belonging, possibly starting in Microsoft Teams and transitioning to WhatsApp if approved.

Alex Powell - LGBTQIA+ Students Community Lead:

This month I held an event with Coventry Pride and Coventry Trans Pride. I helped to host a vigil for Transgender Day of Rememberance on the 20th of November. It was a very somber event but it had a lovely atmosphere as so many memebers of the community came together on such an important day. Thank you to everyone who attended.
At the start of this month I did a presentation to a psychology class on the community, the challenges we face and also resources available both on and off campus. It is great to be able to help educate people on LGBTQ+ identities and issues. It is so important to educate people on the community and I felt great I was able to be a part of peoples education.

LGBTQ+ History Month is coming up in February so we are starting to put ideas and events forward for the month. I am excited to get into the real planning for the month in December and January. If there’s anything you like to see and would like to help host an event in February please get in touch.

Nutan Shan - Global majority Student Community Lead:

I have been working on planning a focus group, which ran on the 6/12/24, This was accompanied by a survey to gauge student understanding of Global themes. I have alos been faciliating conversations about potential commmunity and society collaborations.
