Updates from your Community Officer Odudu:
So far this Semester we have been working hard to re-launch our Communities online and via freshers fair that took place on the 18th of September. We received great engagement and received many creative ideas of what students would like to see from their communities this academic year.
Outside of this I have been working alongside the activities staff and the community engagement leads to plan various events and social media campaigns for Black History Month (BHM).
Community Engagement Lead Updates:
Sophie Horton - Women's Community Engagement Lead:
This month I've been working on plan to implement tea/ coffee dates amongst the women's community that will take place either once or twice a month.
I've also been working alongside the other leads to see how we can develop plans of inter-community events for those who are from intersectional communities, or who want to support other leads in their events and campaigns.
Alex Powell - LGBTQIA+ Community Engagement Lead:
Currently I am planning the first community event of the year for the LGBTQIA+ Community, a tote bag painting event to allow people to come together and find out more about the community. You can find more information about this on the event page. Alongside this I've been working with the activities team and the community officer on the re-launch of the gender expression fund, which helps Transgender and gender-nonconforming students to buy items that affirm their identity and sense of self. Most recently I've been reviewing the universities newly released page on the Student Portal on LGBTQIA+ Students, continuing to review the non-legal name change policy.
Layna Forbes - Disabled Community Engagement Lead:
I have been continuing to work on my Neuro-Inclusive campus campaign, looking into potential funding, and working with academic staff to find suitable areas of campus to construct the first sensory room. As part of this campaign I am also developing some training on neurodiversity for staff and students.
During the meeting I also gave a summary of the ideas I gathered during freshers fair from talking to members and disabled students. One example that was popular was study sessions and coaching workshops, something that may be collaborated on between communities in the future.
Nutan shah - Global Majority Community Engagement Lead:
I've been working closely with the activities team and the community officer over the past month to come up with ideas and make plans for Black History Month. The theme this year is 'reclaiming narratives', and so I have been discussing various ideas from crafting sessions, social media campaigns, SU zone take overs, to movie nights. These events will be coming up pretty soon, so keep an eye on the events calendar.
Victory Ebere - International Community Engagement Lead:
In this month's meeting I fed back some of the information and ideas shared with my during freshers fair as the stall was very busy and we had lots of amazing ideas proposed.
As well as this, I shared some ideas for events and faculty competitions as I am looking into how to increase academic engagement within International communities. This is something I will be building on over the coming months by potentially working with various SU and University departments.
