Heading off to university is an exciting time, but knowing what to pack can feel a bit overwhelming. Whether you're moving from one city to another or even from another country, packing smart can make your transition to Coventry University a lot smoother.

Your Students’ Union is here to help. To get you started, we recommend focusing on the essentials:

  1. Clothes
UK weather can be unpredictable, so it's important to pack clothing that keeps you comfortable throughout the year. Bring a mix of everyday clothes and layers for colder months. Essentials include warm jackets, gloves, a scarf, a raincoat, and cosy jumpers. Pack a couple of outfits for university events or nights out, and don’t forget comfy loungewear and activewear. Comfortable shoes are a must, especially if you'll be walking a lot around campus or in town, and a good pair of waterproof boots will come in handy on rainy days.
If you’re an international student, you might also want to bring some traditional or cultural clothing for special occasions and community events.

  2. Electronics
You should also consider bringing electronics such as your phone, laptop, chargers, a portable power bank and any other gadgets you'll need for studying or staying connected.
If you're arriving from abroad, remember that UK plug sockets may differ, so you might need to bring a travel adapter or purchase one after you arrive. A power strip is a great idea too, especially if your room has limited sockets.

  3. Home Comforts
Our Activities Officer, Layna, recommends bringing personal touches like photos from back home, soft pillows, and cosy blankets to help make your room feel more like home.
You might also want to pack some of your favourite snacks, treats or spices to recreate meals from home, especially during those first few weeks when everything feels new. Familiar flavours can bring a sense of comfort and help you settle.

  4. Important Documents
Last but not least, don’t forget to pack key documents such as your passport, Coventry University acceptance letter, visa documentation and any other important documents.

Depending on whether you're coming from abroad or just a few hours away, you might also consider bringing kitchenware, toiletries, stationery. If you're an international student, we suggest that you avoid overpacking since many everyday items can be bought easily and cheaply once you arrive. Alternatively, you can also order student bedding and kitchen kits online for delivery straight to your accommodation.

Top Tip: Before you start packing, check what’s already included in your accommodation. Some rooms come furnished with bedding, kitchen appliances, or cleaning supplies. Knowing this ahead of time can help you avoid packing or buying unnecessary items.

Finally, don’t forget to pack your adventurous spirit and an open mind! University is a chance to learn, grow, and meet people from all walks of life, make the most of it!
