Black History Month takes place every year in October. Black History Month was created to give everyone the opportunity to celebrate, share and understand the impact of black heritage and culture. Every year the month is used to increase the education and knowledge people have of the black community and the impact people from the community have had across history.

Black History Month was founded by Carter G Woodson. It was first launched by him in 1926 as Black History Week. It is celebrated in February to coincide with the births of the former US presidents Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, who both played a significant role in ending slavery. Black History Month was first celebrated in the UK in October 1987. October was chosen due to it being a traditional time when African leaders gather to talk about important issues.

Each year, there is a different theme; this year's theme is Standing Firm in Power and Pride. The theme highlights profound contributions made by black people through history who were leaders, pioneers and activists.

This year marks 60 years since the UK's first Race Relations Act, a landmark piece in the journey towards racial equality and justice.

At Coventry University, there are students and staff from many cultures from across the world, it is important that the Students' Union works to celebrate and represent everyone. At the Students' Union, we have The Global Majority Community. This community is for students that are Black, Asian, dual-heritage and/or students who have been racialised as ‘ethnic minorities’. During Black History Month, the community is going to run lots of events to celebrate the month and raise awareness of it.
