Since first being celebrated in the UK in 2005, LGBT+ History Month has been commemorated through themes, which often explore parts of society, culture, or history that might be relevant to the groups assciated with the month. These themes are decided by activists within the LGBT Community, with this years theme focusing on Science and Innovation.
LGBT+ History Month happens in February every year in the UK, and is ran by the charity Schools Out. Each year, a theme is chosen; this year it is Science and Innovation. LGBTQIA+ individuals have had a large impact on science and innovation throughout history, some vocal about their identities and others less so. Ensuring diversity and inclusion in science and innovation is very important to ensuring that any developments that are made benefit everyone. It is worth doing some research; there are many key figures in science and innovation that you didn’t know were part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Background
LGBT+ History Month was first celebrated in the UK in 2005 and is celebrated in February because in February 2003, Section 28 was abolished, a policy that prohibited the “promotion” of homosexuality. This is very important, ensuring that everyone is taught about equality, and the LGBTQIA+ community helps to ensure that everyone is aware of the community and works to fight off common misconceptions and stereotypes. The abolishment of hateful policies like Section 28 is key to now being able to celebrate and promote the community through things like LGBT+ History Month, and allows organisations and schools to teach about the LGBTQIA+ community.
February is a time to reflect on LGBTQIA+ rights, the civil movements that have taken place in the past, how far the community has come, and how much there still is to do to help the community. It is also a time to increase the education and awareness of the history of the LGBTQIA+ community.
What is History Month?
History Month is different from Pride Month, which happens every year in June. Pride month is more of a celebration of community and focuses in current issues whereas LGBT+ History Month is a time to learn and reflect on the history of the LGBTQIA+ community.
After hearing all about LGBT+ History Month you may be asking how you can get involved. There are lots of simple things you can do, for example:
- Research LGBT+ History Month and share your findings with your friends
- Follow some LGBTQIA+ influences and organisations on social media
- Look into how you can be a better ally to the community
- Start conversations with friends and colleagues about the LGBTQIA+ Community and its history.
Additionally, here at the Students Union we will be running lots of events that you can get involved in too, for example a crafternoon, SU Takeover and movie night, from the 16th - 20th February. We will also share articles covering related campaigns and historical figures!
Everyone is welcome to come along to any of the LGBT+ History Month events and we encourage you to look out for the LGBTQIA+ articles that will be coming out throughout the month. To find out more check out the LGBTQIA+ Student Community page and join the community for free!
