We have had the first Community Executive of the year and are really excited to have lots of updates from the Student Communities. Find out below what our communities have been up to.
Activities Officer- Layna Forbes:
The community WhatsApp channels have successfully launched, with lots of students joining them. Some of the chats are very active, but some aren’t as active. We will be working on ways to keep engagement in the chats, including developing message templates and ideas for the community engagement leads. We will also be working on ways to ensure all campuses feel included in the chats.
We have made lots of progress on the sensory rooms in George Elliot, and we are hopeful that they’ll be launching soon. We also have lots planned to develop the space in George Elliot, making it a society and community hub.
LGBTQIA+ Engagement Lead- Alex Powell:
I attended the welcome fair and interacted with lots of students. I got lots of sign-ups to the community and promoted the community events that are coming up.
I have developed Trans+ Awareness Training to go out next semester. I am planning to have some feedback sessions with the community around this training to improve it before it goes live. I am also planning, with the help of the Skills Team, to present this training at the Student Leadership Conference coming up.
I have started planning for LGBT History Month in February. Currently, I’m planning a movie night, as well as other activities.
I am also planning to have a Rainbow Laces Campaign, in collaboration with Coventry Sport. I am hoping to launch this during LGBT History Month, in time for Varsity.
I have a Queer Words event on the 9th of October, I am currently finalising all of the planning.
International Community Engagement Lead- Natelie Ho:
I am prioritising a meet and greet networking event on the week commencing the 6th of October. This event will encourage the community to connect and help collect feedback about what the community want to see.
I have been thinking about the International Community Week and am starting to come up with ideas, for example, stalls to raise awareness of the week.
I want to collaborate with the Global Majority CEL. I am currently mapping out a plan for this, looking at doing something for Halloween or winter break.
Disabled Community Engagement Lead- Nica Hlaing:
I attended the Activities Fair, which went very well, and I spoke to lots of people about the community. The WhatsApp chats are going well, everyone is very friendly and is interacting well with the channel. There have been questions around part-time jobs, I have been sharing information about SU resources around jobs and current vacancies.
I am currently working on an event plan that will map out what I plan to do this year with the community. Some community members have organised their own event, which is great to see. This is something I will support going on and encourage other students to run events with the SU and support them with additional funding if needed.
Women’s Community Engagement Lead:
We have now hired someone into this role, and they will be starting soon.
Global Majority Community Engagement Lead:
We are currently in the process of hiring a new Community Lead. We hope to have someone in the role in November.
