The 20th century witnessed the emergence of LGBTQ+ activism in Yorkshire. In this era the Leeds-based Gay Liberation Front was formed. Individuals began to unite for equality and recognition. The decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967 was a pivotal moment, signalling a shift towards a more inclusive society.

The 1980s and 1990s brought about the devastating AIDS crisis, affecting communities worldwide. In Yorkshire, individuals and organisations rallied together to provide support, challenge stigma, and advocate for better healthcare. This period highlighted the strength and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community, fostering a sense of solidarity that has grown with time.

Yorkshire's queer history is a testament to the strength and resilience of the LGBTO+ community. From the shadows of persecution to the vibrant celebrations of todays Pride events like York pride, Leeds pride and the newly created Scarborough pride, the journey reflects the progress and challenges faced over the years. By acknowledging and preserving these stories, we enter into a more inclusive and understanding future for Yorkshire.
