It has come to our attention that international students across the UK, including at Coventry University, are being increasingly targeted by phone scams impersonating government or immigration officials. These scams are emotionally manipulative, financially exploitative, and extremely concerning.
How the Scam Works
A recent case reported by a student shows just how believable these scams can seem. The student received a call, with a recorded message claiming that there was a "legal case" registered against them. After following the instructions and pressing a number to speak to an “officer,” they were told they had failed to pay a so called “Immigration Tax” of £930.
The scammer offered two options:
- Fight the case in court, risking a £20,000 fine and up to two years in prison.
- Avoid legal action by paying the £930 immediately.
When the student suggested they wanted to speak to family first, the scammers said, “there isn’t enough time” and that if the call ended, they couldn’t call back.
These calls create panic, isolate the victim, and pressure them into quick, irrational decisions.
Red Flags to Look Out For
This type of scam shares some key warning signs:
- Unexpected calls about taxes, immigration, or legal cases
- Threats of arrest, deportation, or legal action unless payment is made immediately
- Pressure tactics to act quickly without consulting family or advisors
- Request for immediate payment or bank balance details
- Statements that they cannot call back, preventing verification
How to Protect Yourself
If you receive a suspicious call like this:
- Do not give out any personal, bank, or visa information
- Hang up immediately
- Contact the relevant authority directly using official government websites
- Speak with Your Students’ Union Advice Service for support and guidance
- Report the scam to Action Fraud via www.actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040
Is There Really an “Immigration Tax”?
No, there is no such thing as an Immigration Tax in the UK.
While international students may have responsibilities such as council tax, TV licensing, or income tax if working, these are managed through proper documentation and official communication, never via a cold call.
What HMRC and the Home Office Will Not Do:
- Call you out of the blue, demanding money
- Ask for personal information over the phone
- Threaten arrest without prior notice
- Demand immediate payment with no time to consult
