What to consider before signing a Housing Contract

Finding the right housing for next year can be a big deal, so it’s important to plan ahead and avoid rushing into any decisions. Here’s a quick guide to help you get started and avoid common housing pitfalls.

When to Start Looking

Start browsing housing options a few months before the end of term. November to January is usually a good time. This gives you plenty of time to find a place that suits your needs without feeling pressured.

What to Look Out for in Contracts

  • Rent details: Make sure the rent amount and payment dates are clear.
  • Deposit protection: Check if your deposit will be held in a government-backed protection scheme.
  • Repairs and maintenance: Ensure the contract outlines who’s responsible for repairs.
  • Break clauses: Look for terms on how to end the contract early if needed.

Read through the entire contract, and if you’re unsure, ask questions before signing. If you would like a Student Union Advisor to review the contract before you sign it, get in touch with the team!

Avoiding Common Pitfalls

  • Don’t rush: Avoid signing the first contract you see. Compare options.
  • Check the property: Visit the property before committing to see its real condition.
  • Know your rights: Understand your tenant rights, especially around rent increases and repairs.
