What safety services are available for students on campus?

Your Protection Services

Who are they? Your University Protection Services are a campus security team dedicated to keeping students (and everyone else on campus) safe. They are here for you 24/7 all year round. Protection officers are easy to find, just look for their high-vis vests and their Coventry University uniform patches. Students can call on them any time, so if you have any questions or need help, don’t be afraid to go and say hello!

What do they do? Protection Services cover everything safety! They:

  • Patrol all on-campus areas within Coventry, both on-foot and in dedicated vehicles.
  • Respond to fire alarms, security alarms and help with building evacuations.
  • Answer calls for First Aid or emergency help.
  • Conduct ID checks to make sure that there aren’t people on premises who shouldn’t be.
  • Check campus car parks, including to check whether parking fees have been paid.
  • Operate a lost and found service (you can find it on the ground floor of the Priory Building, Monday to Friday, between 12pm-2pm and 4pm-6pm respectively).
  • Check campus cycle racks to make sure everyone’s bicycles are safe and secure.
  • Check, lock, and unlock university buildings as needed.

How do I contact them? The fastest way to contact Protection is via the Safezone mobile app, which will put you straight through to speak with a member of the team at the press of a button. SafeZone also offers other safety and security features. It’s a must have for all students on Coventry campuses. You can find out more, download and leave your feedback on the app here.

You can also find protection at their monthly roadshows in The Hub and around university accommodation. Here they will be selling safety equipment such as bicycle D-Locks and personal safety alarms as well as providing lots of information and advice around student safety. Keep checking in with your Uni socials to find out about a roadshow near you.

Always remember: Protection Services only operate inside university campus areas and buildings, so if you’re off-campus (such as walking around the city centre) and you feel you’re in immediate danger or you need emergency help, you should call the emergency services by dialling 999.

Campus Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs)

Who are they? Hello! We are PCSO Nav Madhas and Irona Warwick. We work for West Midlands Police as university liaison officers and are here to help and look after students living in and working around Coventry.

What do they do? Our role includes tackling anti-social behaviour, sharing crime prevention information with students, and completing regular patrols around campus. We also contribute to West Midlands Police’s safer students campaign. Check out saferstudents.co.uk or follow the new saferstudents Instagram page for safety life hacks from other students and the professionals.

How can I contact them? Nav and Irona are always happy to meet students and let them know how the local police can help students. This year they are partnering with Your Students’ Union for ‘Cuppa with a Copper’ on the first Tuesday of every month. It’s really informal and friendly with a confidential space if you need to raise any concerns. Come along to the SU welcome area, floor 1 of the Hub where you can chat with them, ask any questions, and grab a free drink and snack while you’re there. Check the SU event pages (or the SU’s social media accounts) to find out when the next event will be.
