Exam season is here! Before you all head away for the winter break, there's one final hurdle to get over. It can be a really challenging time for some, but it's important to take care of yourself and not put too much pressure on yourself. Our Advice Service have but together some helpful wellbeing tips for you to take note of this exam season...
Ditch the comparisons
Feel like your friends are doing more revision than you? Worried that you won’t do as well as your siblings did before you? Did you know, one of the key things that can cause exam stress is comparing yourself to others. Stop and put things in perspective, and always remember you are your own person. There is so much more to a successful work ethic than one exam result. Remind yourself how far you have already come by making it to University in the first place! All these things should help you feel calm; your best really is enough.
Have a plan
Working out a revision schedule in advance can help you feel more in control and leads to the best preparation. See each exam as a deadline, and plan in exactly what needs to be done when in order to successfully meet it. Slice up revision in to small chunks with plenty of breaks so that your brain can be its most productive. If you go off schedule today then don’t be too hard on yourself; use it as motivation to help you get back on track tomorrow.
Have healthy habits
If you look after yourself, the rest will take care of itself. Make sure that breaks you take are away from your desk, even if it’s just to make a cup of tea. Try and schedule some time for exercise, even if it’s just a short walk. Stay hydrated: water is best, and it’s free! Help your body to help your brain by eating the right healthy slow release foods to keep blood sugars level. Make time for things that relax you and try to get 8 hours of sleep a night.
It’s not all work no play!
According to student minds, psychologists say that the average human can only concentrate fully for between 30 to 45 minutes at a time. Revising for all hours every day will often have the same result as if you didn’t revise at all as you will become overwhelmed, tired and unable to remember all the information you need. Be sensible about it and protect those times you have scheduled in for yourself. Your brain, and your results, will thank you later.
Talk it through
If you are feeling overwhelmed or worried to the point where it is having an impact on your daily life, make sure you talk to someone. A parent, good friend or even your tutor can help (it’s what they’re here for). Talking through how you feel is the first step to changing it for the better.
