The society will be jointly affiliated with the STAR organisation which currently has societies in 42 other universities.
STAR is a national charity focused on empowering students, refugees and supporters to take positive action for refugees.
Activities that the society members will take part in include:
Volunteering at local refugee projects.
Places include: homework clubs for refugee children, volunteering at the local refugee centre or english conversation clubs.
Campaigning to improve the lives of refugees.
Topics include: • Equal access to higher education-allow those fleeing from persecution to be classed as home students to allow them access to bursaries and scholarships which are available to other vulnerable people • The refugee crisis-encouraging the UK to stand by refugees and let them come to the UK safely and increasing the number of resettlement opportunities in the UK • Still human still here-ending enforced poverty of those seeking refuge status
Educating about refugees and asylum
Organising activities such as : • Talks • Film screenings • Exhibitions
Fundraising to welcome refugees (at least one event per semester)
Activities can include: • Marathons • Gigs • Cake sales
